NEW HAVEN, Conn.; June 13, 2024 — Avelo Airlines this week takes off from Southern Connecticut’s most convenient airport — Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN) — to four new nonstop destinations: Houston, Texas (HOU); St. Louis, Missouri (STL); Orlando / Lakeland, Florida (LAL); and Traverse City, Michigan (TVC).
Avelo is the only airline offering nonstop service from the state of Connecticut to these four destinations. Additionally, Avelo is the only airline in the state of Connecticut offering nonstop flights to the state of Missouri, and the only low-fare airline offering flights to the states of Texas and Michigan. All four routes will operate on Boeing Next-Generation 737 aircraft.
Very low, one-way fares start at $77*. Travelers can make reservations at AveloAir.com.
Avelo Airlines Founder and CEO Andrew Levy said, “We are excited to offer Connecticut travelers even more travel options with the addition of these four new popular destinations. Whether visiting friends and family, enjoying a leisurely vacation or attending an important business meeting, Avelo offers time and money-saving convenience. With 26 nonstop destinations, flying from Tweed is easier and more affordable than ever. Additionally, when you consider our industry-leading reliability, it is clear why more than 2 million people have flown Avelo at Tweed since 2021.”
The addition of Houston to our HVN route network also underscores the strategic significance of both Houston and New Haven within Avelo Airlines’ extensive network. Houston serves as the location for the airline’s Support Center (how the airline refers to its headquarters) where it employs more than 200 Crewmembers (how the airline refers to its employees) – including the company’s senior leadership team, Operations Control Center, Customer Support Center and other critical support functions. New Haven is the airline’s largest base – employing over 250 Crewmembers supporting eight aircraft which fly to 26 nonstop destinations. Since taking flight at HVN in November 2021, Avelo has flown more than 2 million Customers at Tweed.
Levy added, “The addition of H-Town to our HVN network is especially significant given the direct connection it represents between our systemwide Support Center (headquarters) and Avelo’s largest base. Connecticut is a cornerstone of our growth, and we are excited about the positive impact this route will have in bridging these two communities that are so important to Avelo.”
Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont said, “Tweed-New Haven Airport is a key partner in our overall efforts to attract business and job growth in the New Haven region. More convenient flights and travel options helps ensure that the region has the reliable transportation opportunities needed for our economic growth.”
New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker said, “These inaugural flights provide even more exciting and convenient options for New Haveners to travel to new destinations, including two of the largest cities in the country – Houston, Texas, and St. Louis, Missouri – and two celebrated leisure destinations – Orlando/Lakeland, Florida and Traverse City, Michigan.”
Chairman of The New Haven Airport Authority Matt Hoey said, “The launch of these new inaugural flights is another monumental milestone for Tweed-HVN. These new routes strengthen the airport’s existing vibrant network and offer our passengers a wealth of new travel choices. We are eager to see the positive impact this expansion can have on Southern Connecticut, and we’re excited for a bright future at Tweed New Haven Airport.”
CEO of The New HVN Michael Jones said, “We are ecstatic about the inauguration of our new routes from New Haven. Each of these destinations brings unique opportunities and unforgettable experiences to our passengers. This expansion underscores our unwavering commitment to enhancing regional connectivity, offering unparalleled convenience, and contributing to the vibrant growth of these incredible communities. We also look forward to welcoming visitors into Southern Connecticut to explore all the natural, cultural and experiential assets that the region has to offer. We are on track to host over 1 million passengers this year, a testament to our dedication and the trust our passengers place in us.”
The original New Haven Frank Pepe Pizzeria (Pepe’s) will present Avelo Customers on the inaugural HOU to HVN flight on Friday with a complimentary gift card to sample their world-famous pizzas. Last month, a delegation of over 100 Connecticut pizza makers, veterans, and community leaders traveled to Washington, D.C., on Avelo, as New Haven was honored as “The Pizza Capital of the United States” by U.S. Representative Rosa L. DeLauro at a special ceremony on the steps of the United States Capitol.

Since taking flight on April 28, 2021, Avelo has flown more than 4.7 million Customers on over 37,000 flights. Today Avelo serves 53 destinations spanning 24 states and Puerto Rico. In 2024, Avelo has initiated 16 new routes and 11 new destinations.
Avelo has unlocked a new era of convenience, choice, and competition by flying unserved routes to primarily underserved communities across the country. Every route has at least one small, easy to use airport. This makes every Avelo journey a smooth, easy, and more enjoyable experience than contending with the crowds, congestion and long walks at larger airports.
Avelo is distinguished by its industry-leading reliability. In May, the airline ranked #1 in on-time performance and delivered the lowest flight cancellation rate in the industry – the second straight month Avelo led the industry in both metrics. Additionally, for the first five months of 2024, Avelo climbed to #1 in on-time performance and maintained the second-lowest flight cancellation rate among all U.S. carriers. These results are reported by Anuvu, a leading aviation data services company also utilized by The Wall Street Journal for the publication’s annual airline ranking.
Avelo Customers can always change or cancel their itineraries with no extra fees. Additionally, families can travel with ease knowing every child 13 and under will be automatically seated with an accompanying adult at no additional cost.
Avelo offers advanced seat assignments for sale. One third of its seats are extra leg room seats, ranging from 32 inches to more than 36 inches, offering a more comfortable experience for Customers who value more space. In addition to advance seat assignments, Avelo offers several unbundled travel-enhancing options that give Customers the flexibility to pay only for what they value, including priority boarding, checked bags, carry-on overhead bags, and bringing a pet in the cabin.
