Avelo Airlines Orders Additional VCT Finlets Following 18 Months of Proven Success in Fuel Savings and Emissions Reduction
HOUSTON, Texas., July. 29, 2025 — Building on 18 months of successful in-service performance, Avelo Airlines today announced a follow-on order for additional Finlets from Seattle-based Vortex Control Technologies (VCT). This expansion reinforces Avelo’s continued investment in sustainable operations and solidifies its position as an industry leader in operational efficiency and carbon reduction. Avelo flies Finlets on all its 737NG aircraft.
Avelo became the first airline in the world to equip Boeing 737-800 aircraft with VCT’s patented Finlets and the second airline globally to adopt the technology fleetwide. Since completing its first installation in January 2025, Avelo has recorded consistent fuel savings and meaningful emissions reductions across both its 737-700 and 737-800 aircraft.
Following this proven success, Avelo is now ordering additional Finlet shipsets to accommodate continued fleet growth and maintain its fuel efficiency leadership.
Avelo Airlines Chairman and CEO Andrew Levy says, “Over the past year and a half, VCT’s Finlets have delivered on every promise — from reducing our carbon emissions to lowering our operating costs. This next phase of installations is a direct result of the confidence we’ve gained through real-world performance. It’s a smart investment in our business and the environment.”
CEO of Vortex Control Technologies Andrew G. Morgan says “Avelo’s decision to move forward with additional Finlet installations is a strong endorsement of our technology. We’re proud to continue our partnership with an airline that shares our vision for practical, impactful sustainability.”
Finlets are a patented array of small aerodynamic fins mounted on the aft fuselage of the aircraft. Designed to optimize airflow and reduce drag, they deliver up to 1.4% in fuel savings and a corresponding reduction in carbon emissions.
With its original Finlet program, Avelo projected an annual savings of 560,000 gallons of fuel and 11 million pounds of CO₂. Those projections have since been validated through operational data, prompting today’s expanded commitment.
VCT Finlets require under one day to install per aircraft and have been certified by the FAA following extensive wind tunnel, CFD, and flight testing on both military and commercial platforms. More than eighty aircraft are currently flying with VCT Finlets, with no removals to date.
