Avelo Airlines Adds Lithium Fire Suppression System as a Newly Added Layer of Onboard Safety

  • Portable device strengthens crew response to lithium-ion battery thermal runaway, supporting existing procedures and training
  • Avelo is the first U.S. airline to utilize the LFSS device on the aircraft

HOUSTON, Oct. 23, 2026 – Avelo Airlines is adopting the new Lithium Fire Suppression System (LFSS), a portable emergency-response device designed to help crews effectively respond to lithium-ion battery thermal runaway events onboard the aircraft. Avelo is the first U.S. airline to place this device on the aircraft. LFSS will be added to Avelo’s existing onboard fire response equipment and procedures. Lithium-ion batteries power the phones, laptops, tablets, and power banks that travelers carry every day, and Avelo is preparing for that risk with additional layers of protection.

Avelo Airlines Head of Safety, Security and Operational Excellence Michael Quiello said, “Safety Always is our top priority, and lithium-ion battery fires are a growing risk for passengers and aircraft. This new LFSS device gives our crew an added layer of protection. It’s lightweight, portable, and doesn’t require any permanent changes to the aircraft. Instead of Crewmembers handling an unstable device themselves, it uses a dry suppression agent to help cool the battery, contain the fire, and keep it from spreading.”

Avelo’s introduction of LFSS is part of a broader, layered strategy that includes:

  • Prevention: clear passenger guidance on lithium-ion battery and power bank use in flight.
  • Detection and response: crew training to recognize early warning signs, such as heat, smoke, or swelling in a device, and to respond quickly.
  • Containment and cooling: continued use of Avelo’s established fire containment and cooling procedures, with LFSS available as an added tool.
  • Training and drills: hands-on LFSS instruction in recurrent training, including crew coordination and decision-making.
  • Safety Management System oversight: formal hazard assessment of the new equipment, ongoing monitoring of results through Avelo’s reporting programs, and regular review of procedures.

Lithium Fire Suppression Solutions CEO Lisa Sasse said, “The aviation industry needed a solution beyond conventional fire suppression—one that delivers immediate and complete extinguishment, interrupts cell-to-cell thermal propagation, and absorbs hazardous gases and fumes, while protecting the crew fighting these fires. Our revolutionary LFSS technology advances onboard fire protection through its ‘NO TOUCH – NO HANDLING’ approach, allowing crew members to extinguish a burning device without physically handling or relocating an unstable battery.”

About Avelo Airlines

Avelo Airlines’ purpose is to Inspire Travel by saving travelers time and money. The airline offers service from small convenient airports and low fares. Avelo stands out as one of the leading U.S. airlines in on-time performance and reliability, as reported by Anuvu, a third-party data platform used by The Wall Street Journal in its annual airline rankings. The airline has a fleet of 17 Boeing Next-Generation 737 aircraft. Avelo will be the first U.S. airline to fly the Embraer E195-E2, a new mainline jet aircraft with 140 seats in a 2x2 configuration where no one ever has a middle seat. Avelo placed an order for up to 100 Embraer E195-E2s in September 2025. Avelo serves 39 popular destinations across the United States, including its bases at Southern Connecticut’s Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN), the Philadelphia / Delaware Valley’s Wilmington Airport (ILG), Central Florida’s Lakeland International Airport (LAL), Charlotte’s Concord-Padgett Regional Airport (USA) and, in November 2026, Collin County’s McKinney National Airport (DTX).
